Photographer Captures Moon Trail

A Finnish photographer captured a stunning image of the moon like you’ve never seen it before. 

It’s easy to take the beauty of the moon for granted. It’s something that we see every single day but rarely ever truly take time to look at. This Finnish photographer has produced photos that showcase the moon’s beauty in an interesting and unexpected way.

The photographer, who goes by the name Janne, has perfected a technique for shooting what’s called a “moon trail.” The photo is a result of a long exposure of the same frame that shows the movement of the moon across the sky. The single photo was shot over an astounding 37 minutes, and the result shows a beautiful, brightly-colored streak across the sky.

Michael Zhang from PetaPixel explains the technique and technology behind the photos. “Janne was shooting with a Nikon D800 and 100-300mm lens at 300mm, f/8, and ISO 100. The trick behind the shot was a 10-stop neutral density filter, which greatly cut down the amount of light hitting the sensor and allowed Janne to shoot a 2258-second exposure.”
